 Story:

During the Song dynasty, a few miles north of the Great Wall, William, Tovar, and three other survivors from a European mercenary group searching for black powder are pursued by Khitan bandits. Upon escaping they seek refuge in a cave, but are attacked by a shadowy monster, leaving only William and Tovar alive, the former having slashed off the monster's hand. The next day, they stumble upon the Great Wall and are taken prisoner by Chinese soldiers, who are led by General Shao, General Lin, and Strategist Wang. The officers have been preparing for a monster invasion which happens once every sixty years. However, they are frightened upon seeing the monster's hand, identified as a member of the Taotie species, as they believed the invasion was still weeks away. Suddenly, a wave of monsters attack the Great Wall, and the soldiers respond with archery, ballistas, and catapaults which throw burning rocks. Lin leads a company of female soldiers who jump off the Wall and are pulled back with elastic cords. The monsters are more intelligent and numerous than the soldiers' expectations, but are repelled with William and Tovar's assistance, which earns the soldiers' respect. Later, William and Tovar meet Sir Ballard, a European who, like them, had ventured east twenty-two years ago in search of black powder, which might be sold for a fortune back in Europe. However, Ballard was also taken prisoner, and has been serving as an English and Latin teacher. The three men discuss plans to steal black powder from the store-room and flee while the soldiers are occupied by battle.

During the night, two monsters manage to climb the Great Wall and kill a guard. Shao and Lin lead a platoon to investigate, but they are ambushed and Shao is killed, leaving Lin in charge. Around this time, an envoy from the capital, Bianliang, arrives with an ancient scroll, which suggests that the monsters are pacified by magnets. To test this theory, William suggests that Lin should capture a monster alive using harpoons laced with sedatives, and delays his escape plans to help. At the next battle, several monsters are ensnared, and William bravely slides down a chain to ensure that an ensnared monster is not freed by other monsters. Tovar delays his escape to assist William, to Ballard's disappointment. The soldiers resist the monsters by fighting vertically along the Wall while tied to a chain, and by using spinning mechanical blades. As the monsters are too numerous, Lin resorts to using black powder rockets, whose existence had been a secret. After the battle, the captured monster is taken to the capital by the envoy. A short while later, a hole is discovered in the base of the Great Wall, which the monsters have used as a bypass, a reflection of their cleverness. While Lin investigates, Tovar and Ballard try to escape, and knock William unconscious for resisting. Some distance away, Ballard abandons Tovar, stealing his horse, but is captured by the Khitans, who accidentally ignite a bomb killing themselves and Ballard. Tovar reclaims the horses, but is captured by Chinese riders.

Knowing that the monsters are nearing the capital, Lin orders the use of an unstable technology, namely hot-air balloons, to reach the capital more quickly. Most of the balloons catch fire and the soldiers fall to their deaths. William boards the last balloon with Wang, following Lin to the capital, where they find most of the city already ruined. However, they think of a plan to kill the queen monster by tying explosives to the captured monster from earlier, and giving the monster meat to deliver to the queen. The three people climb a tower to shoot a black powder rocket to detonate the explosives, during which Wang is killed. Two rockets fail, but the third succeeds, after William throws a magnetic stone at the queen right before the rocket hits. In the aftermath, Lin is promoted to regional marshal, and William forgoes a reward in exchange for freeing Tovar. The two are allowed to return to Europe and a contingent of cavalry are sent to protect them.

L² Comment:

This is the first english-language movie that is directed by Zhang Yi Mou in his 33 years of being a director. He has won a lot of awards in Asian but can he won one from the Western country by this movie, let's see... Using the same concept of his 2002 movie HERO, he used sharp colors to differentiate the team of army in this movie.I love the storyline of the movie, very exciting and new while the way of defensing The Great Wall are fascinating as well. Matt Damon still look superb, being the few only western actor, he managed to shine together with the Asian actor but not overly outcast-ed his fellow actors in the same film, which i think is quite important as well... Of course this movie also let a lot of the Asian actors & actresses has the chance to show their face in Hollywood, good work Zhang Yi Mou :)

 Story: 

Two clownfish, Marlin and Coral, admire their new home in the Great Barrier Reef and their clutch of eggs when a barracuda attacks, knocking Marlin unconscious. He wakes up to find that Coral and all but one of the eggs have been eaten by the barracuda. Marlin names this last egg Nemo.

Following his birth, Nemo develops a smaller right fin due to damage to his egg, which limits his swimming ability. Worried about Nemo's safety, Marlin embarrasses Nemo during a school field trip. Nemo sneaks away from the reef and is captured by scuba divers. As the boat departs, a diver accidentally knocks his diving mask overboard. While attempting to save Nemo, Marlin meets Dory, a good-hearted and optimistic regal blue tang with short-term memory loss. Marlin and Dory meet three Australian sharks – Bruce, Anchor and Chum – who claim to be vegetarians. Marlin discovers the diver's mask and notices an address written on it. When he argues with Dory and accidentally gives her a nosebleed, the blood causes Bruce to enter a violent feeding frenzy. The pair escape from Bruce, but the mask falls into a trench in the deep sea.

During a hazardous struggle with an Anglerfish in the trench, Dory sees the diving mask and reads the address located at 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney. As Dory finishes reading the address on the mask, Marlin is able to trap the Anglerfish using the eyepiece of the mask. To her own disbelief, Dory is able to remember the address on her own despite her short-term memory loss. The pair swims on, receiving directions to Sydney from a school of moonfish. Marlin and Dory encounter a bloom of jellyfish that nearly kills them. Marlin loses consciousness and wakes up on a sea turtle named Crush, who takes Marlin and Dory on the East Australian Current. Marlin tells the details of his long journey with a group of sea turtles, and his story is spread across the ocean. He also sees how Crush gets along well with his son Squirt.

Meanwhile, Nemo is placed in a fish tank in the office of Phillip Sherman, a dentist. He meets aquarium fish called the Tank Gang, led by Gill, a moorish idol. The fish learn that Nemo is to be given to Sherman's niece, Darla, who previously killed a fish by constantly shaking its bag. Gill then reveals his plan to escape, jamming the tank's filter. The fish would be placed in plastic bags so that Sherman can clean the tank, and then they would roll out the window and into the harbor. Nemo attempts to jam the filter, but fails, almost getting himself killed in the process. Near the harbor, a pelican, Nigel, flies to Sherman's office and brings news of Marlin's adventure. Inspired by his father's determination, Nemo makes a second attempt to jam the filter. Unlike the first attempt, he is able to successfully render the filter useless, but to the tank gang's dismay, Sherman installs a new high-tech filter before they can escape.

After leaving the Current, Marlin and Dory are engulfed by a blue whale. Inside the whale's mouth, Dory communicates with the whale, which carries them to Port Jackson and expels them through his blowhole. They meet Nigel, and after helping the pair escape from a massive flock of Seagulls, he takes them to Sherman's office. Darla has just arrived and the dentist is handing Nemo to her. Nemo plays dead to save himself as Nigel arrives, causing Darla to scream. Upon seeing Nemo, Marlin mistakenly believes he is dead, before Nigel is violently thrown out. In despair, Marlin leaves Dory and begins to swim home. Gill helps Nemo escape into a drain that leads to the ocean. Dory loses her memory and becomes confused, and meets Nemo, who reaches the ocean. Eventually, Dory's memory returns after she reads the word "Sydney" on a drainpipe. She reunites Nemo with Marlin, but she is caught in a fishing net with a school of grouper. Nemo enters the net and orders the group to swim downward to break the net, enabling them to escape. After returning home, Nemo leaves for school, with Crush's son Squirt, and Marlin and Dory proudly watch Mr. Ray carry Nemo and his friends to school.

In a mid-credits sequence, the high-tech filter in Sherman's tank breaks down, and the Tank Gang escape into the harbour. Bloat realizes that they now have to find a way to get out of their plastic bags.

Wow, I never realize it has been more than 10 years of this cartoon and this is only the second time i rewatch this multiple awards winner movie.This year Finding Dory is out but i didnt have the time to watch it in the cinema :( So before i watch it from any website before end of this year, i need to rewatch this first movie to refresh my memory of the crazy Dory hehe.

The whole storyline is just perfect, the character is damn cute. My favorite one is Peach "the starfish" in the aquarium haha...

The Hunter 2011

 Story:

A mercenary hunter named Martin David is hired by a military biotech company called Red Leaf to go to Tasmania and follow up on two sightings of the presumably extinct Tasmanian Tiger. His orders are to recover tissue and organ samples and to report back once he gathers them, as the company is convinced the sighting reports are reliable. When he arrives in Tasmania under the alias of a professor from a university, he takes up a temporary residence at a rural location with a single mother named Lucy Armstrong and her two young children Sass and her brother Bike. Sass is a very vocal girl, while Bike chooses never to speak, similar to David who prefers isolation. Lucy Armstrong spends most of her time sleeping due to her dependency on prescribed medication - her grief caused by her environmentalist husband Jarrah Armstrong, who disappeared in the Tasmanian wilderness some eight months earlier. Speculation surrounds his disappearance as there has been a longstanding conflict between the local loggers and the 'greenies', a group of environmentalists who have set up barriers to protest the deforestation.

Realizing he does not want to stay at the Armstrong's home due to a neglected malfunctioning generator and the discomfort he feels around the children, David attempts to find someone else he can pay in exchange for temporary lodging. He searches at the local pub, only to be accosted by the loggers who believe he is one of the environmental protestors, which David never corrects due to the need for keeping his real agenda for being in Tasmania a secret. The loggers warn him that if he doesn't leave, he will end up like Armstrong's husband. With nowhere else to turn, David is forced to stay at the Armstrong home. Not long after his arrival, David is met by a local guide named Jack Mindy who gives him a brief synopsis of the environment, and travels with him on his first outing. Mindy remains suspicious of David's true intentions throughout the story.

During his stay, David goes into the bush for twelve days at a time, setting up various steel traps and makeshift snares, while waiting patiently to see if the tiger will surface and checking his traps regularly to see if the animal has been caught. Amidst his comings and goings to and from the wilderness, David slowly befriends the Armstrong children and his isolationist persona begins to change gradually. He helps reduce Armstrong's dependency on medication, in addition to fixing the generator. The story reveals that the pills are being prescribed by her Doctor, and delivered by Jack Mindy, who has been unofficially looking in on the family from time-to-time. David later confronts Mindy and suggests that it may not be a good idea for him to be visiting the Armstrong family, as David suspects that Mindy has an unhealthy obsession with Lucy Armstrong. Eventually, Lucy makes a full recovery and starts taking better care of her children, while befriending David. At the same time, Bike provides David with clues as to the Tasmanian Tiger's whereabouts by drawing a picture of it next to spots of water. These clues were predicated on the fact that Jarrah Armstrong had also been searching for the tiger and was communicating his findings to Bike. David later discovers that Red Leaf had initially contracted Jarrah to locate it, a pursuit he eventually abandoned in favor of taking up an environmental cause to protect the wildlife. Lucy Armstrong informs David that Red Leaf wanted Jarrah to find the tiger because they believe that it has a venom in its bite that can cause paralysis, which they could then use for military purposes. She details her husband's initial pursuit of the animal and tells David that it would be better off if the tiger was extinct, in order that greedy corporations would not be able to exploit it.

While David continues his search for the Tasmanian Tiger, trouble escalates as Mindy becomes jealous of David's interactions with the Armstrong family. Remembering that Red Leaf had advised him to contact them should there be any problems, Mindy calls them and reports that David is spending more time with Armstrong and her two children in lieu of doing what he was hired to do. Red Leaf contacts David and reminds him of what they are paying him to find. David assures them that he has found the tiger's den during his travels, but Red Leaf insists that he put his work first and drop any more fraternization with Armstrong. David - now torn between his friendship with the family and his loyalty to Red Leaf - reluctantly heads back into the bush, much to the disappointment of Armstrong and her children. Simultaneously, tensions begin to escalate between the loggers and the environmentalists, who show up on Armstrong's property one evening and threaten her and other environmentalist friends who are visiting.

David meanwhile, having discovered the location of the tiger's den as well as the remains of Jarrah Armstrong (whose skull has a bullet hole in it), is accosted by another company operative who has been sent in by Red Leaf to replace him. The operative follows David into the bush and holds him at gunpoint, demanding that he show him the tiger's den. David cunningly manages to lead the operative into one of his steel traps and while freeing himself, is able to kill his captor. Now cognizant of the fact that Armstrong and her children may be in grave danger from Red Leaf, David returns to find their home burnt down. David confronts Mindy, who tells him that Lucy and Sass were killed in the fire, believing it to be an accident. But it is discovered that by reporting David to Red Leaf, Mindy became indirectly responsible for their deaths, as it appears as it was the operative who was the one who set the house on fire, though it also possible that the loggers may have done it. Mindy informs David that Bike managed to survive and had been sent away to live in an orphanage. David angrily reprimands an emotionally remorseful Mindy and leaves him to wallow in his grief.

Angered and frustrated, David sets out into the bush to find the Tasmanian Tiger and put an end to Red Leaf's pursuit. When he awakens next to the den the following morning, he looks up to see the tiger staring at him from a ledge above. As the tiger turns and calmly walks away, David climbs the ledge, pursues the creature and after an initial emotional hesitation, reluctantly shoots it. David then approaches the dying tiger and becomes emotionally overwrought. He then proceeds to cremate the tiger in order to remove all traces of its existence and the next day, scatters its ashes to the wind using the water bottle of Jarrah Armstrong.

David returns to town and calls Red Leaf from a payphone, informing them that what they are looking for will never be found, and likewise tells them not to bother looking for him. The very last scene shows David arriving at the orphanage. When Bike sees David, he runs excitedly toward him, says something inaudible (but looks to be "Martin") and the two embrace.

L² Comment:

Storyline is not bad, love the beautiful sceneries of tasmania shown in this film. But the pace is a bit slow. Sam Neil looks so old in this film :( But i still like Willem Dafoe, he's not good looking, but he got something that attracts me :) Overall the film is quite ok, nothing special, to be honest, i wont watch it again :P

John Carter

Story:

After a brief introduction establishing that Mars is not a "dead planet", but rather a dying one inhabited by warring civilizations with great airships, the film begins in 1881 with news of the sudden death in Richmond, Virginia, of John Carter, a former Confederate Army cavalry officer, who has become an eccentric and wealthy scholar-adventurer. The arrival of his nephew Edgar "Ned" Rice Burroughs at his "Uncle Jack's" funeral reveals that, in accordance with his own instructions, Carter's body has been put in a mausoleum, which can only be unlocked from the inside. The estate's attorney hands over Carter's personal journal for Ned to read, in the hope that he may discover the reason for Carter's strange behavior and death.

The film flashes back to 1868 and to the Arizona Territory, where Carter is prospecting for gold and having violent encounters with both the 7th Cavalry and the local Apache Indians. After fleeing from both, he shelters in a cave with Colonel Powell, one of his pursuers, and discovers a large quantity of gold. A strange figure (later revealed to be a White Martian Thern) suddenly materializes in the cave; Carter kills him and, due to the stranger's medallion, is inadvertently teleported to Barsoom (Mars). There, due to his high bone density and the planet's low gravity, Carter is able to jump fantastically high and throw killer punches. He is soon captured, however, by the giant, four-armed Green Martian Tharks under the rule of Jeddak (King) Tars Tarkas.

Elsewhere on Barsoom, the Red Martian cities of Helium and Zodanga have been at war for a thousand years. Sab Than, Jeddak of Zodanga, is now armed with a special weapon (the "Ninth Ray") given to him by the Therns, and proposes a cease-fire and an end to the war by marrying the Princess of Helium Dejah Thoris. The defiant Princess escapes and is rescued by Carter. Carter, Dejah and Tarkas's secret daughter Sola embark on a quest descending the sacred River Iss to find a way for Carter to return home. There they find information about the Ninth Ray, the medallion, and the process by which the Therns teleport ("telegraph") from planet to planet, but they are attacked by the Thern leader Matai Shang and his minions, the Green Martians of Warhoon. After the attack, Carter is captured and taken back with Dejah, while Sola is able to escape. Dejah grudgingly agrees to marry Sab Than, then gives Carter his medallion and tells him to go back to "Jarsoom" (Earth). Carter decides to stay back and is now captured by the shape-shifting Shang, who tells him about the secret purposes of the god-like Therns and their age-old manipulations of the histories of civilizations on different planets. Carter is able to make yet another escape, and he and Sola go back to the Tharks and ask for their help. There they come to know that Tarkas has been overthrown as Jeddak by the vicious Tal Hajus. Tarkas, Carter, and Sola are subjected to a gladiatorial contest with two gigantic white Martian apes. After defeating them and killing Hajus, Carter is acclaimed leader of the Tharks. A vast Thark army, with Carter at its head, advances on Zodanga, then on Helium, and defeats the Zodangian army, killing Sab Than. Carter then marries Dejah himself and becomes Jeddak of Helium. That night, Carter decides to stay forever on Mars and throws away his medallion. Seizing this opportunity, Shang re-emerges from hiding and banishes him to Earth.

Resuming the original framing story, it is revealed that Carter has undertaken a ten year long quest, looking for clues of the Therns' presence on Earth and hoping to find another medallion. His sudden "death" and unusual funeral arrangements would seem to indicate that he has succeeded and returned to Barsoom, leaving his "Earth body" in a coma-like state. His presence on Mars was via a sort of virtual body, and the death of his Earth body would end his life on both planets. He has made Ned his protector, giving him clues about how to open the mausoleum. Ned now hastens to the mausoleum, opens it, but finds no body. He has been covertly stalked by a Thern. As the would-be assassin prepares to strike, Carter suddenly reappears and kills him. Carter discloses to Ned that he never found any medallion, but instead laid a clever trap for a Thern. Carter now takes the Thern's medallion, invokes the necessary code words, and is instantly teleported to Mars, to resume his Barsoomian life with Dejah.

L² Comment:

Well, the trailer is definitely better than the movie. John Carter is a series of novel from Edgar Rice Burroughs in between 1912-1943. A very very old novel which i never read before, but i believe it should be good during that time. But i wonder why nobody ever film this great novel until now. 

The thing that i not really like is the pace of the movie, it has been dragy and slow. I think it would be better if the production spice up the story and create the climate more than this. Other than this, Lynn Collins is very hot, i'm going to search for her other series/movies :)

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

Story:

Darren is an A class student with a good future, his best friend is Steve who is a useless bump. Darren is fancy with spider while Steve fancy the vampire. Steve has been wishing to become a vampire to end up his pathetic life. On one night, they received a brochure from Mr Tiny to attend the freak show.

Despite how the school teacher refuse to let them attend the show, the 2 youngster went on the freak show by themselves. The show was host by Hibernius Tall, all kind of freak person appeared such as the wolfman, the woman who can grown her body again, the rib-man, the man who can eat everything even fire. And Madame Truska who can transform herself by touching whoever feel the future of Darren when she touched him. The final performer is Crepsley who Darren & Steve suspect he is a vampire. Crepsley warn them not to announce his identity or else he will kill them.

The school teacher brought the police to the show and force them to close down. To hide from the school, Darren and Steve hide in the dungeon. While Gavner and Crepsley have their discussion, they discover Steve is there. Steve begged Crepsley to turn him into a vampire, but after tasting Steve's blood, Crepsley state that Steve's blood is not good to become a vampire. Steve is pissed off and swear he will come back to hunt the vampire down. Darren's hideout was discovered too and he ran away by stealing the spider from Crepsley. In the meantime, Gavner inform that vampaneze has sent Murlough to kill Crepsley.

Next day, Steve discovered that Darren got the spider and try to kill it but was bitten instead. To get the antidote, Darren went back to the freak camp and find Crepsley. To take up his wife, Madame Truska's advice, Crepsley decided to turn Darren into half vampire in exchange for the antidote. Darren agree on the deal and promise to guard against Crepsley's coffin during daytime to prevent the attack from Murlough. Darren was found death the next day but actually is a fake death. Later at night, Crepsley come to dig out his coffin and brought him to stay in the freak camp. In another hand, Steve was jealous Darren got his dream and went to work with Murlough to slave the vampires.

Living in the freak camp, Darren was in the same room with the snake boy, Evra. Darren even fall in love with the monkey girl Rebecca. But Murlough brought Steve to attack by capturing Darren's family and Rebecca. Steve offered Darren to surrender and join them but was rejected. While fighting, Rebecca used her tail to open the knots and let go of the Shan's family. Crepsley is unable to fight against the 2 rivals and Rebecca fed Darren with her blood and become powerful to help Crepsley. Mr Tiny was watching all these and finally turn Murlough into a tiny person and went away with Steve.

Finally Darren and Crepsley went back to the Freak camp and other voted and agreed to let Darren stay. Crepsley even offered him a new coffin in the camp too.

This is from Darren Shan's novel series, "The Saga of Darren Shan". How weird, the author used his own name to be the main character, huh?!? The whole movie is not bad, quite good. Just like the freak show in "The Wolfgirl", you can see all sorts of freak showing their freak thing.

But i always thought vampire is monster/creatures but not freak. And both the new actor Chris Massoglia & Josh Hutcherson still need a lot of training on their acting... overall the movie is ok, nothing much excited about it...

Mr Bean's Holiday

Story:

Mr Bean went for the pot luck and won an air ticket to French together with a cam recorder. Being as excited as he is, he reach French with hope of going to the beach that he has dream to. But while buying a snack from the vendor machine, his tie was stuck in the money slot and he missed the train.

Mr Bean then went on for his meal in a restaurant and not knowing the French, he let the waiter order the seafood palate for him. Disgust of eating raw food, he ended up throwing all his oyster into the handbag of a lady who's sitting on the next table. While he went on the train, he force a guy to took his video cam of boarding the train. But his action has coz the guy not able to aboard on the train. Apparently he is a director and his son was on the train, Stepan.

Stepan was angry with Bean with this and stole his cam recorder and gone down on the next station. To get back his recorder, Bean left his luggage on the train. While the next non-stop train came, they saw the father holding a card with phone number on it, but the last 2 numbers was being covered. While they are busying trying to call every number, a train came and they rushed on it, Bean only realize he left all his money and passport on the phone booth. Ticket lady came and hoo them off the train for not getting a ticket. Being out of idea, both of them trying to vandalise the phone booth to get some coins and was chase away by the security guard.

Both Bean and Stepan perform on street and managed to get money and bought ticket to Cannes to meet Stepan's father. But Bean's ticket accidentally fly away and stuck under a chicken's feet. To chase after, Bean went on a bicycle and ride all his way to a nowhere which ended up on a movie scene and met Shabine. In another hand, Stepan managed to take a free ride with others to Cannes. Bean has disturbed the film shooting and Shabine gave him a free ride to Cannes as Shabine is an actress and going for the academy awards.

On their way, Bean met with Stepan again, three of them went over to Cannes in Shabine's car. But police was trying to catch Bean for kidnapping Stepan, so Shabine dressed up the two guys and try to sneak them into the accademy. But only 1 ticket is allowed, being desperate, Bean brought Stepan in. Bean was fooling around with Carson's movie by helping Shabine to gain fame.

In the end, Bean brought Stepan back to his father and he managed to find his beach that he dream of.

The whole movie is a bit of mix & match of Bean's series. Not really exciting though but its quite good. Rowan is funny and i like his expression very much, makes me remember of Goofy ~ hahahaha
